Since the beginning of time, man has been in awe by fire. A properly functioning fireplace can truly be the centerpiece of a room and make a house into a home. My family and I have spent many nights gathered in our family room around ours watching movies and enjoying each others company. But, did you know your fireplace does require annual cleaning and inspections?
NFPA 211 states your chimney and venting system shall be inspected once per year to determine the level of service required. Typically a standard chimney cleaning is required if your system has 1/8” of creosote build up. This service is typically performed by a "Chimney Sweep". The best way to inspect a chimney is by sending a camera into the chimney itself so it can be fully inspected. If any deficiencies are noted at any point during the inspection, the homeowner will be notified, and the proper chimney repair plan can be developed.
Prospective homeowners also should have a Level II chimney inspection performed prior to the purchase of their new home and during the inspection period.
